Former American P.O.W. Jessica Lynch to Speak at League’s 80th Annual Meeting in Charleston — 3/8/16

Overcoming Obstacles Will Be Focus

PARKERSBURG, W.VA.—Growing up in Palestine, West Virginia, Jessica Lynch likely never imagined the immense challenges she would later face in service to her country. From her lingering war wounds to the glaring lights of media scrutiny, followed by college life and motherhood, Lynch has learned to meet them with grace, gratitude, and perseverance. Lynch will share her inspiring story with attendees at the League’s Annual meeting following the Saturday awards presentation on April 23 at the Charleston Embassy Suites.

“We are looking forward to having West Virginia native Jessica Lynch speak at our 80th League Annual Meeting following the Saturday morning awards presentation,” said League President Ken Watts. “As a fellow West Virginian, she has inspired many people within, and beyond our state borders with her ability to overcome many challenges in the face of much adversity,” Watts added.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Jessica will be speaking on the realization that one has the potential to push past the pain to overcome any obstacle to reach his/her goals.

Lynch is a former Private First Class (PFC) in the United States Army and a former Prisoner of War. On March 23, 2003, she was injured and captured by Iraqi forces after her unit was ambushed in Iraq. She was rescued after nine days in captivity on April 1, 2003 by U.S. special operations forces. Jessica’s rescue was the first successful rescue of an American POW since World War II. Lynch recounted the ordeal in her 2004 book, I am a Soldier Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, which she co-authored with Rick Bragg.

Today, Jessica speaks to various groups around the United States about overcoming her obstacles and how perseverance helped her survive. Jessica further explains that despite the most difficult circumstances – whatever they might be – a positive outlook and determination can truly help individuals live fulfilling lives and accomplish their goals.

On the opening evening, the League will be hosting a theme basket live auction to benefit the West Virginia Designated Fund of the National Credit Union Foundation. Proceeds from the auction will help fund League scholarships. Credit unions and chapters are being encouraged to donate auction items.

The 80th League Annual Meeting Official Call has been mailed out to all member credit unions and is available to view online.

Since 1938, the League Annual Meeting has become an annual spring tradition that joins together credit union officials and staff to forge new friendships, celebrate their cooperative heritage, and to recognize achievement among staff and volunteers.
