League Designated Fund Offers Flood Relief and Plan to Accept Donations — 6/30/16

The West Virginia League Designated Fund of the National Credit Union Foundation has allocated $25,000 in relief funds to parts of southern West Virginia affected by last week’s flash flooding. This, on top of a $10,000 grant from the Credit Unions Care Foundation of Virginia will go a long way in helping displaced citizens.

“There has been so much devastation in numerous parts of our state leaving many people with nothing except the clothes on their back,” said League President Ken Watts. ‘We are grateful to the Virginia credit unions for their generous gift, and, paired with our $25,000 contribution, we will put it to good use.

To date, 10 West Virginia counties have been designated as federal disaster areas by the federal government.

Watts noted that thus far, the League is aware of one STAR USA FCU employee, Scott Schoolcraft, who lost his home and most possessions in the flooding. “We will be making a direct donation to Scott and his family very soon to ease their burden during this stressful time, while distributing additional funds to service organizations helping with flood relief,” Watts stated.

In an email appeal to credit unions, Watts explained that credit unions and others wishing to contribute to the disaster relief fund can do so in one of two ways:

1) Complete an ACH authorization form to make the payment electronically; or,

2) Mail a check to the League (411 Cedar Grove Rd., Parkersburg, WV, 26104) made payable to the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) and in the memo line write WV Designated Fund – flood relief

As of Wednesday, June 29, credit unions in West Virginia had not reported any flood damage or interruption of operations.

The League Designated Fund of the National Credit Union Foundation (501 C-3 status) is governed locally, and typically provides scholarships to credit union staff and volunteers, and provides aid in times of natural disasters.
